A tweet sent by Elon Musk’s account on Wednesday asked for Bitcoin and promised to “double all payments” sent to an address.
It’s likely a scam. It was deleted minutes after it was sent before a second tweet asking for bitcoin was posted from the same account and deleted again.
Musk’s tweet was one of scores of unusual tweets on Wednesday asking for bitcoin or from a bitcoin-related account. In addition to Musk, Bill Gates’ account also tweeted a request for bitcoin. Smaller accounts tended to link to an apparent phishing site called CryptoForHealth.
Cameron Winklevoss, the co-founder of cryptocurrency market Gemini, offered an explanation in a tweet: “ALL MAJOR CRYPTO TWITTER ACCOUNTS HAVE BEEN COMPROMISED.”

Tesla didn’t immediately reply to request for comment. Twitter didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
